Winning the Natwest Everywoman Award last week

08/12/2009

I thought I would start my very first blog with a very heartfelt speech I made in front of 350 people in the ballroom at the Dorchester on winning the Natwest Everywoman Hera award. For details, go the the News section, but it was a very exciting surreal moment.

This is more daunting than losing a million!
I feel overwhelmed and very humble to have won this award.

I first entered for it 8 years ago when my life fell apart.

I came to the lunch last year and it prompted me that the time was now right to try again.

Hilary Devey, the winner last year,2008, had entered unsuccessfully the previous year.

What I am trying to say, rather clumsily, is that almost anything is possible – if you believe in yourself and just keep trying!

I learnt in that terrible sleepless year of 2002, that the worst thing in life is not being careless enough to have let somebody steal a half million or so – it’s the betrayal of trust by my accountant and auditors.

I would not have survived without the support of friends, family and colleagues – some of them here today – and I thank them all.

I would finally like to propose a toast – to the unsung heroines of this world and the fabulous vibrant women here today – to you!
