How does Temporary work - work!

To start with you should send through your CV to us via email - to either judi@secretariesplus.co.uk or reception@secretariesplus.co.uk  - we will have a look at your CV suggest any changes we think will help the presentation and if you have good relevant experience we will arrange an appointment to meet.

Temp registration

The registration process consists of completing a registration form, testing your copy typing and one MS package followed by a one to one interview. The entire registration process can take 45 minutes to 1 hour. You will need to bring your passport, full contact details of two previous employers, ideally your immediate boss, that we can contact immediately (within 1-5 business days) to request a reference. You can do the tests when you arrive or you can do them online in advance provided you have an email address and the time to spare.  Please confirm the email address we should use to send you the tests. Please also be aware even if you have tested online we usually test typing speed when you come to the office- this is to see how well you adapt to the slightly different keyboard.

Accepting an Assignment

Once you have been registered, tested and referenced we will do our best to find you work - when we offer you a booking we will give you all the information you will need including a full description of what you will be asked to do, the address, how to get there, who to ask for, how long the assignment will be, the hours of work, advice on the dress code and of course how much you will be paid.

Holiday Pay

Since the UK government introduced the Working Time Directives every worker in the UK is entitled to 4 weeks holidays - I know that will come as a shock to some of you reading this in different countries around the world!  On top of your hourly rate, you also accrue holiday pay.  For each hour you work an additional 8.33% is accrued into your holiday leave fund. The easiest way to work it out is that for every 100 hours you work - just over 3 weeks  - you will earn just over 8 hours holiday. Some temps like to use it as a savings account so you have money to go home with - whereas others will use it to help fund their travels.

NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER

If you are new to the UK and don’t have a National Insurance number, it is important that you get one. National Insurance is mandatory. Your contribution record dictates your access to, amongst other things, medical care including the entitlement to register with a doctor and seek help from a hospital. It is collected from any salary you earn above £82.00 per week. There is no rebate made on NI contributions, it is totally separate to tax deductions.

You will need to make an appointment for a NI Number interview with your local Department for Work and Pensions office. To find your local office, log onto www.hmrc.gov.uk/home.htm or http://www.dwp.gov.uk/localoffice

We have tried to cover many of the questions you have but I am sure there are things we have left out so please feel free to contact us and we will be pleased to help.  Good luck with your adventure!
